Retina injection treatment Q&A

Your eye is mostly made up of vitreous, which is a gel-like substance that helps keep the full shape of your eye intact by filling the space between your lens and retina. Receiving retina injections, also called intravitreal injections, transfers medicine directly into your eye to treat a number of retinal conditions.

At New York Retina and Macula Institute, Dr. Pollack uses retina injection treatment to help repair your vision and relieve your symptoms.

Are retina injections safe?

Retina injections are considered to be safe and very effective. Dr. Pollack administers this painless procedure in the office, and it only takes about 30 minutes. Your comfort level is their priority while getting your eye health to its peak performance.

After the procedure, there are no restrictions for you other than avoiding potential contamination of the eye on the day of your procedure. However, you should contact Dr. Pollack if you develop any of the following symptoms:

  • Pain or discomfort in your eye
  • Increased floaters after your procedure
  • Less clarity in your vision
  • Increased sensitivity to light

Depending on your specific condition, your follow-up visit occurs 4-6 weeks after the injection.

What happens during a retina injection treatment?

First, your eyelids and eyelashes are cleaned with a disinfecting solution. Then, Dr. Pollack puts a device over your eye to keep it open, and numbing drops or gel are placed on the surface of the eye to anesthetize it.

Once you feel comfortable, Dr. Pollack delivers the intravitreal injection quickly into the back of the eye. When the procedure is finished, antibiotic medicine is dropped into your eye to protect it from infection.

Who is a candidate for retina injection treatment?

Dr. Pollack uses retina injections to reduce swelling and the growth of new blood vessels in your eye. These symptoms can develop from a number of retinal vascular diseases that include:

  • Retinal vein occlusion
  • Macular degeneration
  • Macular edema
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Hypertensive retinopathy

Retina injection treatment can also relieve uncomfortable symptoms and help prevent the retina from experiencing further damage.
